Suriname Worldwide
Digital Platform Launch
Project Overview
Suriname Worldwide launched in 2024 as SANI's sister initiative—a digital storytelling platform designed to connect the global Surinamese diaspora through cultural preservation and shared narratives. While SANI focuses on organizational programming and community coordination, Suriname Worldwide serves as the content and storytelling engine, capturing the voices, experiences, and cultural knowledge of Surinamese people worldwide.
I partnered with SANI leadership to develop this platform from initial concept through full public launch, building the brand identity, digital infrastructure, and foundational content strategy in under 90 days to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebrations.
Challenge
The Surinamese diaspora is globally dispersed with limited centralized platforms for cultural exchange and story preservation. Existing social media channels fragment conversations, and there was no dedicated space where community members could share experiences, preserve cultural knowledge, or connect across generations and geographies.
SANI leadership recognized this gap but needed:
Brand Development: A distinct identity that complemented SANI's organizational mission while serving a different function—storytelling rather than programming.
Digital Infrastructure: A website and content collection systems that could scale to accommodate stories from diaspora members worldwide.
Launch Strategy: Coordination with the 50th anniversary events to maximize initial awareness and engagement.
Sustainable Content Model: Systems for ongoing story collection, curation, and publication that didn't require constant manual effort.
The timeline was compressed—we had 90 days from concept to public launch, requiring rapid strategic decision-making and efficient execution.
Strategic Approach
Brand Identity Development
I developed the complete brand positioning for Suriname Worldwide, distinguishing it from SANI while maintaining aligned values. This included naming strategy, visual identity direction, messaging frameworks, and audience definition. The brand needed to feel welcoming to diaspora members at all levels of cultural connection—from those deeply embedded in Surinamese traditions to younger generations discovering their heritage.
Digital Platform Build
I designed and built the Suriname Worldwide website, creating infrastructure for content publication, story submission, and community engagement. The site architecture prioritized user-friendly story collection (recognizing that contributors would have varying levels of digital literacy) and culturally resonant design that reflected Surinamese aesthetic values.
Wi Span Storytelling Initiative
I created the Wi Span campaign—the platform's flagship storytelling initiative. "Wi Span" translates to "our stories" in Sranan Tongo, positioning the project as community-owned narrative preservation. I developed the campaign strategy, submission frameworks, promotional materials, and content curation guidelines.
Launch Coordination
I coordinated the Suriname Worldwide launch across the 50th anniversary events, creating materials that introduced the platform to 450+ attendees across Legacy Night and Suriname Day. This included table tent QR codes for immediate story submission, printed promotional materials explaining the platform's mission, and verbal introductions during programming that positioned Suriname Worldwide as SANI's ongoing legacy project.
Content Strategy & Systems
Beyond the initial launch, I established systems for ongoing content collection, review processes, publication workflows, and community engagement. These frameworks ensured that Suriname Worldwide could continue growing its story archive without requiring constant hands-on management.
